Jewelry and Politics

Madeleine Albright, former secretary of state has written a new book entitled "Read my Pins". The book part memoir and part social history, tells how diplomatic life and jewelry became linked - quite by accident.  Albright attributes this to a comment made by Saddam Hussein when he referred to her as "an unparalleled serpent".  Shortly after, when she was deciding what to wear for a meeting with Iraqi Officials, a snake pin that she owned seemed highly appropriate.

Since then, pins have become part of Madelaine Albright's diplomatic signature. Ranging from a happy ladybug, to crabs and wasps. In a meeting with Nelson Mandela she wore a Zebra pin, and to celebrate her appointment as Secretary of State - an Eagle pin.  The stories give an often humorous account of both the role of jewelry and global politics in the life of one of America's most fascinating and accomplished diplomats.

Serpents and Snakes - Jewelry from Bulgari

Bulgari has launched a new collection called "Serpenti" to celebrate its 125th anniversary. A stunning range of bracelets, rings and watches.  The range includes, a bracelet created in yellow gold with coral and diamonds, a pink gold ring with onyx and pave diamonds, watches in either white or yellow gold with mother-of-pearl and pave diamonds.

Bulgari has been no stranger to snake jewelry for the last 50 years or so, since in the 1940's the jeweler introduced a method called Tubogas coil technology.

The new collection Dior Joaillerie "Kings and Queens" by Victoire de Castellane

The Diamonds may be forever, however, the sculpted, one of a kind rings and brooches take the form of skulls!  Intricately handcrafted and set with crowns and collars of ornate set diamonds. Each skull is fashioned from a variety of stones including blue chalcedony, purple sugalite, pink opal etc.  There are 10 King  brooches and 10 Queen rings  set in platinum using an ancient technique rediscovered by Dior Joaillerie's ateliers.  They are intended to be worn as a set.  Whilst you cannot deny that they are beautiful, I personally am not that into skulls but since the idea behind the jewelry is for it to outlast its wearer, perhaps the skulls serve as a reminder of how quickly time passes by.
